Drawing Games

Drawing Games is uniquely designed to evoke creativity through card based games. The creator, "Mythic" Matt Maes, experienced people claiming that they "aren't creative" and with over 30 years of experience as an artist, set out to prove otherwise. Over scores of workshops in settings across Denver, where everyone who joins has found themselves drawing, regardless of whether they consider themselves an artist, one thing has become abundantly clear: Creativity exists within everyone, just waiting to be awoken. Matt understands how intimidating the blank page can be, and how a creative nudge can help to move the pencil to paper.

The games are structured but fluid depending on how people engage with them, including conditions like time limits, teams, achievements, and more. The three game types have different levels of engagement from very open ended, to more group based involvement.

  • "Free Association" gives loose instructions such as "Draw something in your favorite color. You can take any idea and run with it in any way you want.

  • "Draw A Card" offers a specific idea that you then draw in your style. This game offers more guidance by giving creators a definite concept to put on paper.

  • "Cluster Shuffle" brings groups together to draw something based on a scene such as “Zombies invading a village”. When everyone is halfway finished, you put everyone's into a pile and shuffle them, then redistribute so everyone finishes someone else's drawing.

Time and again, Matt has experienced something astonishing in the way people engage with drawing: That with no instruction, art reference books, or sometimes even music, people are happy to get right down to drawing; A testament to the aliveness of the creative instinct.Matt has held workshops at locations across Denver such as the Denver Art Museum, Gypsy House Cafe, Revel Autism Support, and many more.

Drawing Games may currently be experienced through an ongoing partnership with Lumonics Light and Sound Gallery located in North Denver.
